Traditions

  • Andalusi classical music travelled south with the people expelled from Iberia, and is still played in Fez and Tetouan as a suite form called the nuba.
  • Gnawa music, rooted in sub-Saharan West Africa, is ceremonial: the all-night lila moves through colours and spirits, carried by a three-stringed bass lute and iron castanets.
  • The Amazigh traditions of the Atlas and the Rif are their own languages and their own musics, distinct from the Arabic repertoire of the cities.
  • Essaouira, a port with its own festival, is where the Gnawa tradition has met jazz and other musics most openly.

Instruments

  • Guembri — three-stringed bass lute central to Gnawa ceremony
  • Qraqeb — large iron castanets that drive the Gnawa pulse
  • Oud — the lute of the Andalusi repertoire
  • Bendir — frame drum with snare strings beneath the skin
  • Rabab — bowed fiddle of the Andalusi orchestra
  • Ney and lotar — reed flute and Amazigh lute of the mountains
